A permanent marker bonds to surfaces an ordinary pen slides off — plastic, metal, glass, film and glossy card — and does not lift once it is dry.
That permanence is the point and the warning: it will not wipe off a whiteboard, and it bleeds through thin paper onto whatever is underneath. Work on a spare sheet, and let it dry before you stack anything on top.
